Creative arts

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.

Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

Creative and performing arts vision statement

The Blaxland High School creative and performing arts (CAPA) faculty is committed to engaging students in their learning and giving them the confidence and opportunity to experience personal growth in a thriving performing arts culture that is second to none.

The CAPA faculty prides itself on providing a broad spectrum of educational and performing artist opportunities and experiences for our students. Our CAPA culture combines a dynamic learning environment, inspired-and experienced teaching staff and a peerless reputation for participation and excellence across all disciplines at a community, regional and state level.

Our students are regularly recipients of Art Express, Encore, Callback and Onstage nominations in the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and many of our students have been featured artists in the school spectacular and talent development projects.

Our dance, music and drama students are represented in all regional performing ensembles and our voice program is the largest in the Greater Western Sydney region, which includes 4 major vocal ensembles.

The CAPA faculty presents a major musical every 2 years, involving students from Year 7 to Year 12 fostering a collaborative learning environment and developing independence and creativity.

The CAPA faculty provide many opportunities for parents, families and the broader community to witness and be part of our programs including:

  • art exhibitions
  • dance showcase
  • HSC performing arts evenings
