Ambulance cover

Ambulance cover

The Ambulance Cover Scheme provides assurance that if a student enrolled at the school has an accident or falls ill whilst at school or on an organised school excursion or activity, and requires the ambulance service, the cost will be met through the scheme.

Overview

In 2012 the Department negotiated an agreement with the NSW Ambulance Service to commence an annual licensing arrangement for school student ambulance cover for all public schools in NSW.  This means that students enrolled at our school are covered under the Ambulance Service of NSW Ambulance Group Cover Scheme-Schools, in accordance with the policy established by the Ambulance Service of NSW.

NSW government schools do not have to arrange individual payments to the Ambulance Service of NSW – coverage is included through a single central annual agreement.

What is Ambulance School Cover?

The Ambulance Service of NSW Ambulance Group Cover Scheme-Schools: Policy Guidelines provides coverage that ensures that in the event a student enrolled in a NSW government school has an accident or falls ill while at school or on an organised, fully supervised school excursion and requires an emergency ambulance service, that neither the school nor the parents will be responsible for the payment of the ambulance account under the terms and conditions of the policy.

What circumstances are not covered by Ambulance School Cover?

The Ambulance Group Cover Scheme-Schools is exclusive to enrolled students who have no other form of ambulance cover. The Scheme does not extend to members of staff and/or visitors to a school. It covers the provision of emergency ambulance services for all students either at school or on a fully supervised school organised excursion.

The Ambulance Group Cover Scheme-Schools is for student accidents or illnesses that arise at schools or on organised, fully supervised school excursions or activities.

The cover does not extend to incidents that occur at non approved, unsupervised activities. Nor does the scheme cover incidents or illnesses that occur outside of normal school hours, before school has started or after school hours while these students are unsupervised and not engaged in an approved school excursion or other activities.

The Ambulance Service of NSW will determine any issues that may arise from disputes in accordance with the policy.

Are cross border excursions covered?

For the 2019 school year, coverage of the scheme extends for cross-border excursions to the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.

There are no reciprocal arrangements in place for NSW students travelling on school excursions to either Queensland or South Australia. In these instances, it will be necessary for schools to arrange separate individual student travel insurance.

Are students travelling under the Assisted School Travel Program covered?

Yes. NSW public school students travelling under the Assisted School Travel Program are included in the Ambulance Group Cover Scheme- Schools when they are travelling to and from school, provided the journey is not broken for any reason.
