The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.
The syllabus consists of the following strands:
- number and algebra
- measurement and geometry
- statistics and probability.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:
- Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
- Mathematics Extension 1
- Mathematics Advanced
- Mathematics Standard 2
- Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
- Mathematics Life Skills.
Faculty vision statement
The vision of the mathematics faculty is to:
- see further growth in NAPLAN and HSC results
- continue to train and support staff in accordance with performance and development framework
- continue setting of high expectations with students in class and during assessments and with the setting of high quality and appropriate assessment tasks in accordance with standards
- embed technology into programs to cater for the future focused learner
- ensure teaching spaces allow for the presentation and delivery of materials to students to cater for a variety of needs
- continue and further refine the acceleration of students into Stage 6 (Year 11 and Year 12) mathematics courses based on concrete evidence
- promote the faculty in the wider community
- review programs regularly to ensure we are meeting the needs of all learners.
